چکیده

Introduction. Diffusion-weighted (DW) MRI provides important information regarding the arrangement of white matter fibres. However, imperfections in the DW gradients may cause errors in the estimation of diffusion parameters. The sources of the gradient errors are various and may arise from long-term eddy currents, background gradients, imaging gradients, and spatial non-linearity and non-uniformity of the gradients. We present results demonstrating the influence of these errors into the accuracy of the fibre orientation density function (ODF) estimation. A DW gradient calibration scheme, which can be used to mitigate the gradient errors, is also described. We compare the reconstructed fibre ODFs from two datasets, acquired in vivo with and without the application of the diffusion gradient calibration scheme [1, 2] and calculated the statistical efficiency [3] of the unbiased fibre ODF estimators for these datasets. Methods. Several approaches for reconstructing fibre orientations from high angular resolution diffusion imaging (HARDI) have been proposed as alternative methods to diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) [4-8]. Here, we obtained the fibre ODF combining the general idea of spherical deconvolution [6] with the Funk-Hecke theorem [7], which leads to:

The effect of finite diffusion gradient pulse duration on fibre orientation estimation in diffusion MRI

An essential step for fibre-tracking is the accurate estimation of neuronal fibre orientations within each imaging voxel, and a number of methods have been proposed to reconstruct the orientation distribution function based on sampling three-dimensional q-space. In the q-space formalism, very short (infinitesimal) gradient pulses are the basic requirement to obtain the true spin displacement pr...

A pitfall in the reconstruction of fibre ODFs using spherical deconvolution of diffusion MRI data

Diffusion weighted (DW) MRI facilitates non-invasive quantification of tissue microstructure and, in combination with appropriate signal processing, three-dimensional estimates of fibrous orientation. In recent years, attention has shifted from the diffusion tensor model, which assumes a unimodal Gaussian diffusion displacement profile to recover fibre orientation (with various well-documented ...

Validation of q-ball imaging with a diffusion fibre-crossing phantom on a clinical scanner.

Magnetic resonance (MR) diffusion imaging provides a valuable tool used for inferring structural anisotropy of brain white matter connectivity from diffusion tensor imaging. Recently, several high angular resolution diffusion models were introduced in order to overcome the inadequacy of the tensor model for describing fibre crossing within a single voxel. Among them, q-ball imaging (QBI), inher...
